Perfect moment – Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands have always been a mythic place to me. Back in 1999, we were travelling Ecuador up and down and we managed to get a 8 day trip to the famous islands in the Pacific. I had seen numerous documentaries and was excited to set foot on the islands.

What impressed me most was the fact that all these wild animals showed no fear. You could get really close to watch them. No tele lens needed.They checked us with one eye and accepted us in their world. The only place where I have a similar feeling is underwater. I love diving for a lot of different reasons but the fact that you can get face to face within touching distance with wild animals in their habitat is one of the main reasons.

Some of the habitants of the Galapagos islands seemed to have skipped several stages during the evolution. Oh yes, Darwin was here and put up his famous theory!

Here one of my favourite encounters. A young Galapagos albatross. He still has to wait a bit to get rid of his teenager face and to be able to fly :-

I can’t but think that it is a huge privilege to witness nature that way : close up but with respect. The balance is fragile…

I will never forget the look in these eyes…

These animals never had a reason to fear men . Let’s hope we don’t prove them wrong!

Next Friday will be held a multi media show @ Prabbeli in Wiltz. I’ll have the pleasure to present our photos from last year’s trip to Flores. You will discover colourful reefs and amazing country sides through the island of Flores and of course the famous Komodo dragons.

Come and spend some time with us in the cosy setting of the Prabbeli, a drink in your hand!

Beginning : 8 pm

Vendredi 20 janvier, j’aurai le plaisir de présenter nos photos du voyage à travers l’île de Flores. Vous allez découvrir des récifs coralliens colorés ainsi que des paysages enchantés et bien entendu les fameux dragons de Komodo!

more fairy tale diving

Today again we had a dive in Samarangersee. The sun was with us which gave us the opportunity to play with the sunbeams….a never ending story…

In the sunniest part of the lake the white algae carpet seems to be even thicker. It makes you think of some melted material which had glided over the trees …ages ago

In some parts, green dots lighten up the monotone whitish colour.

Wherever you raise your head you see the trees surrounding the lake bathing in bright sunlight.

We kept to the fairy tale idea and decided to spent the afternoon in Neuschwanstein castle which is only one hour drive away. We ended up in a real tourist industry village. actually there are up to 6000 visitors daily who want to visit king Ludwig II’s retreat.

Disney’s Sleeping beauty must be awake for a long time since…

we just had our last dive here at Fernsteinsee. We went back to Samarangersee to get more picture with nice sunbeams.

Fairy tale lake

Today I was diving one of the most amazing spots I’ve ever seen! It was like diving in a fairy tale! The Samaranger See is known for its limitless visibilty. It is a small lake and divers are limited to 4 at one time together in the lake. On top of that you need to have at least 100 logged dives in your logbook to access the place. Ah yes, did I mention that you only have access if you stay at least 2 nights in the owner’s hotel?

All I can tell you is that it is worth all this!

When you enter the 8C water you quickly come to see tree trunks which have fallen into the lake. Everything is covered in a whitish thick algae carpet. Touching is strickly forbidden. Watch your buoyancy!!!

Carnival in Nuweiba

Beginning of March we spent to fantastic weeks diving in Nuweiba. This was carnival time too!
Have you never thought of celebrating Carnival underwater while diving???
Well we did and Sarah and Daniel from African Divers tried to get most of it on video while Chris shot the pics.

…what’s really cool on the dive site Myserique is this huge brain coral called Brian’s brain. It is called so for more than 20 years now. Usually these corals collapse under their weight but this one has resisted so far.
it is more than 7 m high.
